An umpire is a man who devotes his leisure time enabling 22 others enjoy themselves' He is a man who knows from the time he walks out on to the field of play" he is sure to displease someone" but bravely walks on' An umpire endures the scowls and curses of many of those he has dedicated himself to serve with great self control'
K'T' was fondly called the Dickie Bird of Sri Lanka' He was undoubtedly one of the most respected umpires not only in Sri Lanka but in the world' He possessed a thorough understanding of every law of the game and acted as the jury and the judge for both prosecution and defense passing judgment in three to five seconds'
Francis was born in Kagalle on October 15" 1939' He studied in Kegalle and Batticaloa and after completing his education joined the Ceylon Railways as a guard' But his first love was cricket and umpiring'
In his distinguished umpiring career spanning over three to four decades" Francis reached the top through sheer hard work" discipline and commitment'
He created history by officiating the first Sri Lankan Test in 1982' He umpired in 25 Test matches" 56 ODIs' Further he officiated the World Cup tournaments in 1996 and 1999' After retiring from umpiring he served as the Director of SLC umpires'
K'T' was one of the nicest gentlemen I have met' He was a man of honesty and integrity who always helped the umpiring fraternity' He was strict but a lovable" charming personalty'
Francis~s demise is not only an irreparable loss for his family" wife Wendy" children" Michele ^Canada& and Thomas but to the entire cricketing world'
His body lies at A'F' Raymond funeral parlor' The burial will take place on Thursday ^June 13" 2013& at 4'00pm at the Roman Catholic section of general cemetery" Borella'
